The familiar weight of the cat, Clementine, curled at her feet, was a constant reassurance for Sarah. She sat on her sofa, the soft cushions yielding to her weight, enjoying the afternoon sun that slanted through the window. The clinking of dishes from the open kitchen, the murmur of the television in the background – these were all pieces of a comfortable, well-known puzzle.

She had just finished a particularly satisfying cup of tea and the world felt right.

Her phone buzzed, a new message. Her neighbor had sent out an email about a building meeting. Sarah's eyebrows furrowed slightly as she considered it. But then, Clementine purred, and Sarah’s attention drifted back to the light and shadow dancing across the Persian rug.
